# Popups

> Popups for size guides, offers and videos that open from any link or on their own, the newsletter popup and age verification.

Popups are not in Theme settings: they are sections in the **Popups** group. Open it at the top or bottom of the section list in the theme editor. Only the three popup sections below can be added there, and they start hidden – **show the section** (the eye icon) to turn it on.

## Popup

A general popup for a size guide, offer terms, a video, a product or anything else.

### Open it from a link

Give the popup an **ID**, such as `size-guide`. Then link any button, menu item or text to `#popup-size-guide`:

- The link opens the popup on the same page.
- A link to another page with the hash, such as `/products/linen-shirt#popup-size-guide`, opens that page with the popup open.
- In a menu (**Online Store › Navigation**), add a link and type `#popup-size-guide` as its address.

Each popup needs its own ID; letters, numbers and dashes only.

### Layout

**Opens as** a *Window in the middle*, a *Panel from the side* or a *Sheet from the bottom*, in three widths. Build the content from blocks: **Heading**, **Text**, **Image**, **Page content** (the text of a page from Online Store > Pages, for example a size chart), **Product**, **Video** (an uploaded video or a YouTube or Vimeo link), **Button** (a link, or *Close the popup*) and **Custom Liquid**.

### Open it on its own

**Open automatically** can open the popup *After a delay*, *When the pointer leaves the page* (desktop) or *After scrolling* part of the page.

- **Show on:** all pages, the home page, product pages, collection pages or the cart page.
- **Show again:** on every page, once per visit, or after some days.
- **Don't open on its own on mobile / desktop:** links still open it.

> **Tip**
>
> Use automatic popups sparingly. One popup per visit is plenty, and search engines may rank pages lower when a popup covers the content on mobile right away.

## Newsletter popup

Invites shoppers to subscribe. Subscribers are added to your customer list in Shopify with the *newsletter* tag, as with the Newsletter section.

- **Open after** a delay in seconds, or earlier when the pointer leaves the page on desktop.
- **Show again after** a number of days once a shopper closes it. Shoppers who subscribe never see it again, wherever they subscribed.
- **Hide for logged-in subscribers** keeps it away from customers who are already subscribed.
- **Layout:** image on the left, image on top or text only.

Selecting the section in the editor opens the popup so you can see your changes.

## Age verification

Covers the store until the visitor confirms their age, for stores that sell alcohol, tobacco or other age-restricted products. The answer is remembered for 1 to 90 days.

- Set the question, the button labels and the message shown after declining.
- **Backdrop darkness** and **Backdrop blur** control how much of the store shows through.
- Turn off **Show in the theme editor** while you edit the rest of the store. Shoppers always see it.

> Age verification is a notice, not a legal check of a visitor's age. Find out what your country requires for selling age-restricted products.
